Funeral Service at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 701-A Norwood Road, Silver Spring, MD, 20905 on Wednesday, February 5, at 11 am.  Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in the memory of Michael Papadopoulos.

TYME, Irene Orentia

Irene Orentia Tyme

The matriarch, Irene Orentia Tyme, known to all as GonGon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, in the comfort of her home in Silver Spring, MD.

Irene was born in Silent Hill, Jamaica on September 27, 1915, to Alfred Ashley (DaaDa) and Annie McLiesh (MaaMa).  From DaaDa, Irene had a brother Sidney and a sister Willel.  A kind and loving mother to 8 children, Ena (pre-deceased), Roland, Hyacinth, Jennie, Merle, Neville, Audley and her baby, Alma.  Remembered by her children as a forgiving woman.  A grandmother to 27, a great-grandmother to 56 and a great-great-grandmother to 12 – GonGon was always in the presence of love.  She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.  She was loved.  Remembered as a praying woman that loved to worship the Lord.  A woman that instilled in her family the importance of being in the presence of the Lord, the importance of education and discipline.  A kind woman, always eager to give without expectation.  She will be forever remembered…forever loved.

She will be forever missed and tucked safely in the hearts of those that loved her. Rest in Eternal Peace.

Family, friends, and others whose lives have been touched by Irene “GonGon”, are invited to her home church, Montgomery Hills Baptist Church, to celebrate her life and legacy.  Memorial Tribute will be on Friday, February 7th,  from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.  Funeral Service will be on Saturday, February 8th, from 11:30am – 1:00pm.  Both services will be held at Montgomery Hills Baptist Church, located at 9727 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Body in State 11:00am-11:30am on Saturday, February 8th.

After the Memorial Tribute on Friday, February 7th , all are welcomed at her home located at 2201 Coleridge Drive, Silver Spring, MD to share in her culture.

Burial will be at George Washington Cemetery located at 9500 Riggs Road, Adelphi, MD 20783.  The Repast will be at Montgomery Hills Baptist Church following the burial.

SCHOENING, James “Jim” Scott

James “Jim” Scott Schoening

James “Jim” Scott Schoening passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Columbia, Maryland at the age of 60.

Jim is survived by his father, James Schoening and step-mother, Paula Schoening of Lewiston, Michigan; husband, Doug Cincotta of Woodstock, Maryland; daughter, Holly Keller and son-in-law, Shawn Keller of Rock Springs, Wyoming; sister, Virginia Beane (Rob); sister, Betty Gaydos (Craig); brother, Danny Schoening (Laura), and many beloved family and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother Gwendolyn Kennedy and beloved grandparents Alton and Marion Schoening and Loren and Margaret McEwen.

Jim was born on June 29, 1959 in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Clarenceville High in 1978. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably for 11 ½ years. He spent time defending our country during Desert Storm and went on to work and retire from the U.S. Government. Jim met his partner, and now husband, soon after leaving the Navy and they shared 30 wonderful, loving memorable years together.

Jim was an outstanding cook, excellent decorator, made friends wherever he went, was very generous and caring towards his family and friends. His quick wit and warm heart left everyone feeling better.

A Celebration of Jim’s life will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 9120 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, Maryland 21042 on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM with a funeral service and a time of fellowship to follow at 4:30 PM. Further services will be held at Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 1233 Union Lake Road, White Lake, Michigan 48386 on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Family and friends will gather from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM with a memorial service and a time of fellowship to follow at 1:00 PM. Estee Vaughn (Age 79)

Estee (“Cool Tee”) Vaughn, 79, of Silver Spring, MD passed away on January 17 after a valiant battle with dementia.
Estee was born on December 20, 1940 to the late, Elijah and Laura Vaughn in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Estee was raised in Rocky Mount and was one of five children. During the early years of Estee’s life, he attended Phillips High School, served as the county bus driver, played the saxophone and graduated at the top of his class. Estee was well-known, hardworking and reliable. During his time in high school, he met his wife, Ella. After graduating high school, Estee and Ella started a family and moved to Washington, DC.
On June 23, 1964, Estee and Ella married, settled in Takoma Park, MD and had three children. During most of his adulthood, Estee maintained two jobs. He worked as a Sanitation Worker for Laidlaw and a Janitor for Ship Shape. Estee was a dedicated employee, and spent over 25 years with Laidlaw, before retiring in 1999. Estee enjoyed spending time with his family, teaching life lessons such as driving and playing sports, going out dancing, watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and working on cars. You could always depend on Estee for a good laugh, sound advice and a listening ear.
After years of serving as a dedicated member at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church, Estee decided to give his life over to the Lord and was baptized in 2003. After his retirement, he committed his time to providing care for his grand and great grandchildren. He babysat, saw them off to school, picked them up each day, watched them while they played outside and made sure they had the best snacks.
During the most recent years of Estee’s life, he was a loved patient at Tender Loving Care in Hyattsville, MD. The family would like to acknowledge his caretaker Jackie, for ensuring his health and safety.
Estee is survived by, his wife, Ella Vaughn, his five children Doris Vaughn-Thomas (Cleon Thomas), Clayton Vaughn, Estee Vaughn Jr. (Davon McCormick), Myron Wye (Angel Wye) and Robin Judd, ten grandchildren, Denise Lee (Anthony Cummings), Denisha Lee, Denee Hemmings (Emmanuel Ohene-Akonnor), Brooke Vaughn, Mylah Wye, Maliah Wye Kenneth Judd, Reynard Judd and Tiffany Judd, three great-grandchildren Amani Lee, Anthony Lee and Anthony Cummings Jr., one sister, Jean Douglas (Clinton Douglas) one brother, Mick Vaughn and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at Mount Jezreel Baptist Church, 420 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring, MD, on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at 11 a.m. Interment Maryland National Memorial Park.

William Osman Abdi (Age 88)
William Osman Abdi, of Olney, MD passed away on January 23, 2020 at Bedford Court Assisted Living in Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of 65 years to Gerri Marie Abdi, father to Inci Abdi (Michael) Hepner, Julie Abdi (Perry) Turner, and Linda Abdi (Mark) Wilson. Grandfather to Kimberly Nicole (Brooks) Leitch, Stephanie Michelle Hepner, Christopher William Hepner, Halle Marie Wilson, and Jack Tyler Wilson. Great-Grandfather to Aiden Chase Leitch. Brother to Ayten Daly, June Chance, and Ilhan Abdi. Will was born April 9, 1931 in Weirton, WV, son of the late Osman Abdi and Faxima (Dervsaki) Abdi. He graduated from Weir High School in 1949 and received an Associate Degree from Steubenville Business College in 1951. Will served in the Navy for three years stationed in Key West, FL. After completing his active duty, he attended West Virginia University graduating with a degree in Engineering. Will worked for the Navy Department as a civilian for a total of 30 years; 20 years at the former Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, MD, and 10 years at NAVSEA in Crystal City, VA. In his spare time, Will enjoyed gardening and growing orchids, cheering on the Redskins, duckpin bowling and spending time with family. COSMOS, Spencer John

Spencer John Cosmos
Born on February 19, 1938, to Alex and Mary Louise Cosmos in Chicago. IL., Spencer was the oldest of six siblings, and is survived by sisters Jan and Mary Lou (Jason), and brother Kevin. He was preceded in death by sister Karen and brother Christopher.
On December 19, 2019, he died of natural causes at Holy Cross Hospital with family by his side. Husband of Ursula Poetzchke; father of Joanne, Emily (Arsen), Julia; stepfather of Erik (Porsha), Nicky (Ben); stepfather of Stephen and Marci; grandfather of Jamie, Martina, Hanna, Madelyn, Aspen and Lincoln.
Dr. Cosmos was a professor of English at Catholic University of America and Montgomery College. Spence is remembered for his warm personality, love of teaching and a good game of softball, and a camera in his hand.

SHELDON, Robert “Bob”

Robert “Bob” Sheldon

Robert “Bob” Sheldon died peacefully in his sleep in Takoma Park, MD on Friday, January 17th, 2020 at the age of 68. Robert was a loving father and brother. He is survived by his son Matthew Sheldon and daughter-in-law Avery Perryman Sheldon as well as his sister Frances Sheldon and husband David Dietzen. He was preceded in death by father Richard Charles Sheldon, mother Violet Twinum, and stepmother Jane Sheldon.

Bob was born on May 11th, 1951 in Frankfort, Germany, to Richard Charles Sheldon and Violet Twinum. He grew up in Evanston, Illinois, where he attended Evanston Township High School, and later graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in Communications.  He married Martha Hoff in 1982; they divorced ten years later but remained close friends as they raised their son Matthew. Bob began working for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in 1978, serving in various roles until his retirement in 2013. Bob and Martha welcomed their son Matthew in 1986, and set about teaching him a love of the outdoors through bicycling, a zest for community service and passion for politics. Matthew remembers him as a kind, driven and involved father who encouraged him to pursue his goals.

Bob was an accomplished cyclist who sought out adventure on the saddle. He had many cycling adventures including riding across the US in 1978 and completing the Paris-Brest-Paris, a 1200 km European cycle race, in 2003. He especially loved to ride with his son Matthew in Colorado. He was an active and dedicated member of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church and was a volunteer for various organizations such as Shepherd’s Table, the Takoma Park Folk Festival, and the Takoma Foundation, where he served as a board member and spearheaded the Annual Beer Fest.  During Matthew’s school years, “Coach Bob” coached youth soccer, basketball, and baseball teams for 27 seasons, and served as Commissioner of the Youth Soccer League.

There will be a celebration of Bob’s life at 3:00 pm, Friday, January 24th at the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church, Bethesda, MD,  All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to  American Tinnitus Association or  Cedar Lane Universalist Unitarian Church attention: Sanctuary for Rosa

The family would like to thank GW Medical Faculty Associates healthcare providers, and the Georgetown Tinnitus support group for their care for Bob’s health throughout the years, and the BU CTE Center, whose research will continue to help patients in their understanding of Traumatic Brain Injuries.
